Jaspur And Mikey Let Me Know
by Lauren Merryfield
Two weeks ago, Curtis, our maintenance guy, quickly built a playroom for our cats on our balcony. We had been asking, since February, for a decision on how we could allow our cats out on the balcony without their getting off. It would be difficult for Jim or me to retrieve them, should they bolt--we knew two of them would.
The main problem seemed to be that some aspect of management wants all balconies to look alike; we are not allowed to modify them to our personal liking, however, they heard our concern.
Months of indecision brought some amount of impatience in me, but finally, on a day when I was sick in bed, Curtis showed up, out of the blue, and made the enclosure from the black, plastic screening we'd purchased. He made the playroom as high as the balcony railing, so that it really doesn't show. The other half of the balcony is for us humans.
This will probably be okay with all but Jaspur, who will know, after escaping several days ago, that another adventure is possible only from the humans' side of the balcony; he's too smart not to know this already.
The first time they went out Jim supervised them and they did fine; no breaking through, as we feared.
My first time letting them out was several days ago, when the temperature was warm--kitty weather, and Jaspur had begged to get out.
I was okay about this for a while until I heard Jaspur meowing. It sounded as if he were meowing from the other side of the railing. Oh no! had he gotten out?
I nearly panicked and my hopes for the success of their playroom seemed dashed. Now what would we do?
I called to him from their small doorway but he continued to sound as if he had gotten out and was meowing to get back up. Why else would he be meowing like that?
I reached my hand in their little doorway, and there was Jaspur at my hand, letting me know that he was still up here with me and the rest of the gang.
Still not really believing this, Mikey, too, came to my hand, meowing as if to say "stop worrying; he's okay; he's up here."
I know the guys know I can't see and they realized that Jim was home, yet I did not know. Daddy being home was what brought on Jaspur's meows; he always does it; yet, for some reason, due to the sound of it, I feared the worst.
Jaspur was busy meowing, from the railing side, to Jim, while dashing back to the small door, reassuring me. The quieter, more laid-back Mickens too made sure I understood. Smart cats, our Jaspur and Mikey!
